How Brush Mulching Works

Brush mulching uses a high-powered forestry mulcher head mounted on a CAT track loader to grind standing trees, brush, stumps, and woody vegetation into fine mulch right where it stands. Unlike traditional clearing methods, there's nothing to haul off — the organic material stays on-site as ground cover, reducing erosion, retaining moisture, and naturally decomposing back into the soil. This is the go-to service for wooded lots, overgrown properties with saplings and brush, fence line clearing, and any property where the vegetation is too heavy for a mower but doesn't require full excavation.

Pricing is $2,500 per acre. Flat rate. No surprises, no negotiation. We provide a free on-site estimate to confirm acreage and scope before any equipment rolls.

Equipment

TreeShop deploys CAT large-frame track loaders equipped with high-flow hydraulics and purpose-built forestry mulcher heads including Fecon and Diamond attachments. This isn't a skid steer with a brush cutter bolted on — it's production-grade iron designed specifically for forestry mulching work.

Large-frame CTLs provide low ground pressure (critical for Florida's soft soils), serious pushing power for dense vegetation, and the hydraulic capacity to drive mulcher heads at full RPM through 8-inch hardwood. The result: faster clearing, finer mulch, and cleaner results than undersized equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between mulching and land clearing?
Mulching grinds vegetation in place — the mulch stays on the ground. Land clearing removes everything including root systems, stumps, and often involves grading. Mulching is faster and more affordable when you don't need a perfectly clean surface.
Can you mulch trees larger than 8 inches?
The forestry mulcher head handles vegetation up to about 8 inches in diameter efficiently. Larger trees are typically felled first with the excavator and then mulched, or removed as part of a land clearing scope.
How long does brush mulching take?
Most residential lots (under 1 acre) are completed in a single day. Larger acreage projects are typically 1-3 acres per day depending on vegetation density.
Is mulching better than burning or hauling?
For most properties, yes. Mulching eliminates hauling costs, burn permit requirements, and smoke. The ground cover also protects topsoil and reduces regrowth compared to bare clearing.
What happens to the mulch after clearing?
The ground mulch decomposes naturally over 6-18 months depending on material and conditions. It acts as erosion control, retains soil moisture, and suppresses weed regrowth in the meantime. Most property owners leave it in place.
Do I need a permit for brush mulching?
In most Central Florida counties, brush mulching on private property does not require a permit since nothing is being burned or hauled. Properties in wetland buffers or with protected trees may have additional requirements — we'll advise during your free estimate.
